Rooted in the Land: A Legacy of Agriculture at Smithfield Farms in Rosedale, Virginia

Updated: Jun 18

In the heart of Russell County’s rolling hills lies Smithfield Farms, a multi-generational cattle operation that represents not just the strength of Virginia agriculture but the deep-rooted legacy of family, land stewardship, and community resilience.

Founded in 1774 by Henry Smith, Smithfield Farms has stood the test of time, weathering wars, recessions, and changes in industry and technology. Now in its 8th generation of family ownership, the farm is proudly managed by Andy and Kim Smith, who continue to evolve and grow while honoring more than two and a half centuries of history.

Commitment to Quality

At its core, Smithfield Farms is focused on raising premium Angus beef known for superior marbling, tenderness, and flavor. With 330 mama cows spread across 1,200 owned and 300 rented acres, the farm produces a high-quality crop of preconditioned calves each year, marketed through the Virginia Cattlemen’s Tel-O-Auction, a system that connects Virginia farmers directly with buyers and markets across the country.

The Smiths’ dedication to animal health, pasture management, and sustainable practices has made their operation a standout example of modern cattle farming grounded in heritage.

"Every year brings new challenges, but also new opportunities to grow and improve—whether it be making improvements to the land, the cattle, or to ourselves as humans,” says Andy. “Cattle production offers a unique balance of continuous learning and balance with the rhythms of nature."

What makes Virginia’s beef industry—and farms like Smithfield—so impactful is that they’re not just about production. They’re about people. The Smith family takes great pride in being part of a network of producers who support one another, advocate for agriculture, and carry on traditions that have shaped Southwest Virginia’s rural economy for generations.

Their work doesn’t end at the fence line. Andy and Kim are active participants in Virginia’s beef industry, embodying a spirit of collaboration and service that uplifts both fellow farmers and the next generation of agricultural leaders.
